Safety Drills

Every month we practice safety drills at school.  Each month we complete a fire drill as well as an “auxiliary drill”, such as a severe weather drill, an evacuation, or a lock down-drill.

Last Thursday, 9/14 we completed our first lock-down drill. A lock-down would be called if there are unsafe conditions within the building (or exterior) and we need all students and staff to be sheltered in a safe space. We never use language about what might cause a lock-down, but do use language such as “if there is every anything unsafe in school, this is a way for us all to stay safe”. Teachers at all levels work with their students using age appropriate language.

In the coming months, we will have an earthquake drill, a reverse evacuation (going from outside to inside if there is a safety issue), a shelter in place (weather) and an additional lock-down drill. We also have a fire drill every month. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.
