Dear Lafayette Families –
Somehow we are in the last two weeks of school! We closed out May with two spectacular Field Days. Last Wednesday, Ms. Perll and the PK/KDG teams ran wild and enjoyed the art of play in what is undoubtedly the cutest (and most exhausting) day of the year for our littlest people. On Friday, Ms. Howes and Ms. McClure executed a flawlessly amazing Field Day with over 80 stations, parent volunteers, tug of war, relay races, and popsicles. We also managed to collect enough steps on our pedometers as a school to walk from DC to Los Angeles! The students were SERIOUS about getting their steps! As I walked down the halls, kids at the water fountain were marching in place while drinking just to keep adding on steps. Thank you to all of you that supported Field Day – it is always one of my favorite days of the year.
This week there are many exciting ways to join in the spirit of community. Kaleidoscope Kids and Student Council have joined together to celebrate Pride month and our LGBTQ students and families. This week is spirit week with a student council popcorn sale on Friday. If your student would like to buy popcorn on Friday, please have them bring 50 cents to school. The spirit days are as follows:
Tuesday – “True to yourself Tuesday/Pride Day” (wear rainbow gear and or your “true self” outfits)
Wednesday – Wacky Wednesday
Thursday – Tired Thursday (PJ day)
Friday – Film Friday (dress as your favorite film character)
This year we have a handful of retirees! Ms. Dixon has been with Lafayette since 1989 and has decided that it’s time to quietly retire. She is a pillar of warmth, creativity, and support to our students and staff. Her quiet, kind, and enduring support of our students is remarkable and will be deeply missed. We hope you are able to celebrate her in the garden for coffee on Tuesday morning. We are also saying goodbye to Ms. Nickel after 30 years of teaching!!! Her zany, passionate, and deep commitment to teaching children is a gift that is irreplaceable. She is one of a kind and an incredible teacher in ways that are not easily articulated. Please join us in celebrating her retirement Tuesday evening from 6 pm – 8 pm in the Great Hall. This year we are also celebrating the official retirement of Nurse Chris Cockrell. Last year Nurse Cockrell “semi-retired” and has been working part-time. This year we officially have to say goodbye as she trades in her band-aids and ice packs for the Adirondacks and Triathlons. We are also celebrating the retirement of Connie Harn this year. She has been a force within Lafayette for the past 17 years. She will be missed for her fascinating stories and her commitment to social studies and students.
