We Stand With our Asian American Families and Staff

The Racial Equity Committee (REC) and administration of Lafayette believes that ALL people should be allowed to live safely in our country and the world.  The shocking rise in violence and hate for Asian Americans continues to be at the forefront of our minds, even as we tackle other topics of equity.  The recent attacks against Asian Americans resulting in the loss of several innocent lives is one that is both infuriating and heart breaking.  Please know that the staff of Lafayette stands with Asian Americans in the quest against racism and hate and towards equity and safety for all.

For Teachers: Addressing Anti-Asian Bias: The Learning Justice organization has shared resources ” can help you teach the historical precedents for this moment, introduce ways for students to recognize and speak up against coronavirus racism, and start conversations with even the youngest learners about recognizing and acting to address injustice”.  These mixed with resources recently shared regarding the capitol riots and other hate filled events are available to educators to help foster meaningful and healing conversation with students.  Please reach out to a member of the REC committee if you need support in tailoring conversations with students.

For Parents: Addressing hate is unfortunately a too frequent occurrence in the news that our young learners have been exposed to.  They have shown us time and time again that they are willing and brave enough to have these tough conversations. National Geographic has an resource for families when discussing recent events.  One article is entitled “Talking to Kids about Xenophobia” Learning for Justice has a wonderful resource entitled “Beyond the Golden Rule”.  Please reach out to your child’s teacher, or other educator if you are looking for further resources to help answer any questions and address concerns your child may share.

For our LES young learners: Once again we are met with examples of hate and violence in our news that may impact how you or your friends may be feeling.  Please remember that teachers and other staff are here for you if you need to talk about it.  All you have to do is let an adult know and we are here for you!

The Mental Health (MHT) team is available to process with any students or staff who are looking to process, share and ask questions in a safe and supportive space.  Please reach out to any member of the MHT team for further information.
